These Hawaiian Roll Grilled Cheese sandwiches are the ultimate party appetizer or fun family dinner. Sweet Hawaiian rolls are sliced, slathered with a savory garlic-herb butter, and stuffed with gooey melted cheddar cheese. They are baked to golden perfection, creating a delightful sweet and savory flavor combination that pairs perfectly with tomato soup.

  • Total Time: 35
  • Yield: 12 sandwiches

Ingredients

1 package (12 count) King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sweet Rolls

1 package (approx. 12-16 slices) Sharp Cheddar Cheese (or cheese of choice)

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon dried oregano

½ tablespoon dried parsley (or 1 tablespoon fresh)

Tomato soup (optional, for dipping)

Instructions

1. **Preheat Oven:** Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. **Make Herb Butter:** In a small bowl, mix the softened butter with the garlic powder, oregano, and parsley until well combined.

3. **Slice Rolls:** Separate the Hawaiian rolls into individual rolls. Carefully cut each roll horizontally into thirds (creating three thin slices per roll) to maximize the bread-to-cheese ratio, or simply slice them in half for a classic sandwich style.

4. **Butter the Bread:** Spread the garlic herb butter onto the cut sides of the roll slices.

5. **Assemble:** Place the bottom slices on the prepared baking sheet. Layer a slice of cheddar cheese on top. If using the ‘thirds’ method, add the middle slice of bread, another layer of cheese, and top with the final bread slice.

6. **Bake:** Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes. **Important:** Flip the sandwiches halfway through the baking time to ensure both sides get golden brown and crispy.

7. **Serve:** Remove from the oven when the cheese is fully melted and the bread is toasted. Serve immediately, preferably with a warm bowl of tomato soup for dipping.

Notes

Cheese Options: Cheddar is classic, but Havarti, Gouda, or American cheese also melt beautifully in this recipe.

The ‘Thirds’ Method: Cutting the rolls into three slices creates a double-decker style grilled cheese, but you can stick to standard halves if you prefer a simpler sandwich.

Make Ahead: You can assemble these sandwiches a few hours ahead of time and keep them covered in the fridge before baking.

Serving Suggestion: These are best served hot! If they cool down, pop them back in the oven or air fryer for 2-3 minutes to crisp up.
