The ultimate Chocolate Orange Cake recipe! Unbelievably moist and tender thanks to a secret ingredient combination of oil and buttermilk. This cake is deeply rich with chocolate and bursting with bright citrus flavor.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 39 minutes
  • Yield: 16

Ingredients

1 ¾ cup all purpose flour

1 ½ cup granulated sugar

¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (natural, not dutch-processed)

2 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

½ cup canola, vegetable or olive oil

2 large eggs

3 teaspoon orange extract

1 cup buttermilk

½ cup orange juice (100% juice, no added sugar)

½ cup water

Optional Garnish: Candied oranges

Instructions

1. Prep Your Oven and Pans: First, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Carefully grease two 9-inch round cake pans, line the bottoms with parchment paper, and then grease the parchment paper itself.

2. Combine the Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, add the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Whisk them together thoroughly.

3. Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a separate large bowl, combine the oil, eggs, orange extract, buttermilk, orange juice, and water. Use a whisk to beat everything together until it’s smooth.

4. Create the Batter: Gently pour the dry ingredients into the bowl with the wet ingredients. Mix on low speed or by hand until the batter is just combined and smooth. Do not overmix.

5. Divide and Bake: Pour the batter evenly between your two prepared cake pans. Bake for 22-24 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

6. Cool Completely: Place the cake pans on a wire cooling rack and allow the cakes to cool completely in the pans before attempting to remove them.

7. Frost and Finish: Once fully cool, carefully remove cakes from the pans. Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting and decorate as desired.

Notes

Measure Flour Correctly: Do not scoop flour directly from the bag. Use a spoon to fluff up the flour, spoon it into your measuring cup, then level with a flat edge to prevent a dry cake.

Easy Frosting Tip: For easier frosting, wrap the cooled cake layers and freeze for at least one hour. This firms up the cake and reduces crumbs.

Storage: Store the frosted cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It also freezes exceptionally well for up to 2 months.
